The 2014 rifle season for White-Tailed Deer in the Western Upper Peninsula was pretty much a bust during opening weekend, due to the four feet of snow (after four successive days of blizzard). We have as much snow on the ground here at Rauhallinen Farm in North Ironwood township as we did this past February. Eric and I were sharing a blind at my dear friends property outside of Trout Creek (Tom and Sharon). Sitting in a large heated blind 16 feet up on stilts, with up to eleven doe at a time, was a treat after days of hunting in a portable blind with snow up the the windows. Eric has one more chance tomorrow morning before he has to leave for home. I will hunt next weekend at Toms for one last try. Regardless, we had a great adventure and our usual camaraderie as father and son who greatly enjoy our time together. Eric has loved the UP since he was a toddler and is always bummed out to leave for the rat race of the Detroit burbs.
