The Aster have ushered in Fall, as long as I can remember. Here in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, there are three species of Aster that are quite prevalent during this transitional time. Other harbingers of Fall are Red Maples and Aspen that are quickly changing color, an increasing number of deer on my apples, and the gradual decline of both perennial and annual flowers on the farm. The Fall bird migrantion has also started subtly, with the first White Throated Sparrow on the ground feed this morning, while sipping coffee. Soon the Juncos will pass through on their way further South. The pellet stove has been running for a week, due to highs in the 40's. I will likely lose some plants tonight, with a low of 31 F. This is my favorite time of the year.
