Goldenrod

Dusk
The common nighthawks
appear each evening
an hour or so
before darkness
Airiel foraging
on the wing
in the insect laiden
skies of my farm.

Effortlessly gliding
compared to the
erratic flapping
of the brown bats
who inhabit
a lower layer of the
evening sky
with  a more frenzied
and random
approach to
securing a meal.
The subtle signs
of approaching Fall
invisible a week earlier,
are introduced by
roadside goldenrod
and a sense of
what will soon be
a passing.
These transitions,
both in the natural world
and in our social lives,
which we are juvenile enough
to think matter
in the larger scheme of things
remain
indifferent.
