Slim Buck and Doe

The nice thing about monitoring a game or trail camera, as they are called, is having an accurate idea of what you have for a deer population, at least in your vicinity.  This young spike buck and his female partner are quite gaunt, but will fatten up as summer and fall progress. They will not be harvested at Rauhallinen Farm and we hope others will let them mature as well. This young buck will be a four or six pointer next year, and she will produce another one or two offspring. We have had three times the buck this year, compared to last, which is amazing, given our horrific winter with over fifty days of  below zero temps. Most of my patients have yet to have buck sightings, so we feel very fortunate. Having Spring Creek next to us, little in terms of housing, and plenty of apple trees, is likely the mix.
