" A sense of place....Rauhallinen translates from Finnish to English as at ease, calm, clear, easy, orderly, peaceful, quiet, serene, tranquil....all attributes of these acres in the far Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. When Otto Riekko (who was born in Finland in 1877) and his wife, Sanna, built this stone farmhouse, including the adjacent stone house and outbuildings which are now a part of the pumpstation for the water supply for the City of Ironwood, in 1920, I am convinced they used this word from their native Finlander lexicon to describe their homestead, much of which has remained unchanged. The near three foot thick stone walls of this farmhouse would likely survive a nuclear attack. I hope they would be honored to see the diligence I exercise in the care and landscape design of their property.....
