East Branch Ontonagon River Rainbow Trout

The East Branch of the Ontonagon River in Houghton County remains my favorite and most successful stretch of river to trout fish. Too overgrown for flyfishing, here I use a custom five foot spinning rod (St. Croix blank) made by Thorne Brothers in Minnesota, and either worms or the smallest Panther Martin Spinners. Short accurate casts are required, and even with much practice, lots of breaking off and retying. This has been an exceptional year for many 12-14 inch rainbows, which are a gourmet meal.
