Dusk
The common nighthawks
appear each evening
an hour or so
before darkness.
Airial foraging
on the wing
in the insect-laden
skies of the farm.
Effortlessly
gliding,
compared to the
erratic flapping
of the brown bats
who inhabit
a lower layer of the
evening sky
and employ
a more frenzied
and random
approach to
securing a meal.
The subtle signs
of approaching Fall,
invisible a week
earlier,
are introduced by
roadside goldenrod
and a sense of
what will soon be
a passing.
Saluting a dream
of Summer.
